Eva toyed with the silver beaded bracelet at her wrist. Last night had been … odd. In some ways it had been everything she’d been dreaming of. Being held in Henrik’s arms … that one dance would feed her heart for years. His parting words were bittersweet but somehow they’d thawed the last of the frustration she felt towards him. He had been a crown prince then, just as much as he was now—it didn’t really matter why he hadn’t been able to turn up. She was never going to be royal material, so she needed to just move on. She’d glimpsed bits of the softer Henrik. He’d smiled and even laughed at Izzie’s antics. Knowing that the man she’d met in Italy was still in there somewhere, settled her mind.
Felix hadn’t reappeared, not even for dinner, which had left her feeling a bit like she needn’t be there. But Sophia, Izzie and Henrik had stuck close all evening. She’d surprised herself by how relaxed she’d felt in their company, dressed as she was. The dinner that had followed had been delicious, though seeing Sophia and Henrik seated together had brought her back to earth from the bubble she’d floated off into for a while. He’d only danced with her to fill the time, probably as an apology for his brother not returning. Pity dancing.
Enough! Wallowing didn’t suit her, and honestly it wasn’t at all helpful to her real reason for being at the palace. As far as she could tell she was holding up her end of the bargain. She hadn’t seen Harriet again since the garden party, and Felix had said she was acting like a great cover. Of course, that would be easier if he was actually around. She didn’t like to feel like she was taking advantage of this deal, and even though she’d done a little tailoring for Felix it didn’t appear as if he was getting as much out of this agreement as she was. Guess it was too late to change much now. She barely had ten days left until she’d leave—walk away from Stenaco and from Henrik forever.
Rolling her eyes at her thoughts, always so happy to stray back to Henrik, she pulled out this morning’s paper that had been delivered to her room amongst a whole stack. The Stenish papers had mainly focused on a new regime being passed by parliament but a few of the London papers had run articles on her and Felix. It amazed her how quickly the media had turned them into a great love story. They’d been out a few times, yes, but mainly in groups with other people. The only real show of ‘relationship’ was that one surprise kiss outside the nightclub.
She was starting to learn though that the media could be quite creative when it came to reporting news. Her face was plastered on the front of the Star. Not a paper she ever read whilst home, but since it mentioned her, she’d plucked it out of the pile.
